Naturalists are invited to share their own haiku with us. A simple definition of a haiku is:
"a Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons"
Make sure each haiku is well-thought out and provides a sense of moment in the natural world.
We look forward to reading your haiku.

Trees sway in the wind
Letting leafs fall to the ground
My rake is ready
The trees rustle
The leaves falling
Everything is quiet
-Luke S.
Melancholy moon
lingering over sorrow
why are you so sad
The very bright sun,
A humongous ball of gas,
Poof! A prominence!
-Julia #18
squirrel at the feeder
munching happily on seeds
come again abert
watching birds fly by
building nests high in the sky
chicks chirping for food
-Katie W.
Wings of butterflies
Pounding against the window
Nature is coming
-Tim E.
The repeating call,
The call of a mated crow pair,
Leave earth, to the sky.
Watching from above,
Eyes glistening so brightly,
Locked on the small mouse.
Chickadee-dee-dee,
The call of the chickadee,
Echoes through the trees.
Trees tower above,
Majestic beauties indeed,
Ponderosa Pines.

Studies of the pond,
Abiotic pond studies,
Hope I learn a lot

chipmunk
The chipmunk is running
Away from its predator,
Safe inside its hole.
quiet creek
Calmly rippling,
On a quiet summer night,
Crickets are chirping.
grass
Waving in the wind,
Animals hide quietly,
From their enemies.

Birds sing in the sky,
Lovely sounds for me to hear,
Birds sound wonderful.

Insects
A grasshopper creeps
A dragonfly zooms by
Insects surround me
Pigeon
Faintly, slowly calls
Flies slowly and steadily
Quietly perches
Red winged black bird
Loud chirping calls
Flying overhead quickly
Red and yellow wings
Snakes
Rattling quickly
Moving away ready to strike
Hissing a slow hiss
Junco
Small tweets calling
To the other juncos near
Enjoying the seed
Chickadee
Slow high pitched chirping
Enjoying feasting on seed
Frightened by others
Mule deer
Galloping away
Jumping over our fences
Munching seed gladly

Ashten said, Jenna nice haiku, how do you like this one
In a hardware store
Surrounded by some weird things
I wish I was home
It really is not about nature, but it is hard to think of something you are not around and surrounded by something that has no meaning to you.
Animals in the dark
Going through the thick bushes
Here comes a black bear
Turkey Vultures glide
In the wind they go around
Looking for some food

My Hamster
Hamster runs in cage
I don't hear it in two days
I check and it's dead
Owls
Owl swoops down and dives
It catches a mouse for meals
Then flies to its nest
Owls silent night flight
Swoosh the silhouette of it
Silently passes
Jenna P.S. On my haiku insects the second line is supposed to be A dragonfly zooms by me.
I'm a naturalist
The natural world is home
My life is nature
Flap flap flap flap flap
Beavers signal for danger
They hide in their den
Snow falls very lightly
Snow balls fly though the air
The world is asleep

thunder is roaring
i hear the pidder pater of rain
the wind is blowing
a squirrel scratched the tree
there is elk scat on the ground
a burrow nearby
deer scratched a tree
they are eating my garden

Majestic bird soars,
Above my head it flies,
A Golden Eagle
(LYDIA)
Tornado warning
Alerts me of high, high winds,
Get under cover!
A deafening howl,
A loud, high-pitched scream,
Sudden flash of gray.
Gray Wolf
(LYDIA)
A long, loud KABOOM!,
A meteor hits the earth,
It leaves a crater.

The evening has gone,
Now it's become very dark,
Stars shine a bright light.
(LYDIA)
Stalking prey,
The lioness leaps
Onto prey.
(LYDIA)
I see bright colors,
From a medium sized bird,
The Painted Bunting
(LYDIA)
Hoot from owls,
Camoflauged at night,
Can't see them.

Wow! I posted a lot of haikus on Friday, May 20! I hope to many more!

Leaves blow in the wind,
It is Autumn in the woods,
Frost covers the ground.

(Lydia's little brother)
Hey guys! My little brother posted his own haiku!
See you guys at school!
(LYDIA)
Hoots in the distance,
A soft glow arises in the sky,
Good night my dear friend.
The Peregrine Falcon
It calls to me,”Cree, Cree, Cree”
Crossbow in the sky.
Owls are hooting,
Wolves howling to the bright moon,
The Call of the Wild.
I lay in the grass
Continuing to wonder
Notebook in my hand.
We come face-to-face
A rattlesnake and myself
Rattle’s just a blur.
(JULIA)
I’ve got yet another haiku up my sleeve!!!!!
The Rainforest
A hibiscus blooms,
With vivid feathers flashes,
A bird streaking by.
-Julia
